Garage Floor Coating

$5–$9/sq ft installed · one-day install

A coated garage floor in Huntsville runs $5–$9 a square foot installed, takes one day, and should outlive your mortgage if the prep is done right. That last clause is where the industry cheats — so let's talk about prep.

What a garage coating actually is

A garage floor coating is a bonded plastic wear surface, a few hand-built layers thick, that turns porous concrete into something you can hose off. That's it. Everything else — the brand names, the flake colors, the warranties — sits on top of one question: did the installer make the concrete ready to hold it?

We grind every slab with diamond tooling. No acid etching, no "clean and coat." Grinding takes off the weak cream layer at the surface and leaves the texture the base coat needs to lock in. Skip it and the coating is only ever holding onto dust.

Our garage build is the Rocket City System — polyurea base, full flake broadcast, polyaspartic top. The system page has the exploded diagram and the full datasheet. This page is about whether a coating is right for your garage at all.

Sometimes it isn't. A garage you're converting to a gym or office might be better off polished — no coating to scratch, nothing to ever peel. And a slab with serious moisture issues needs mitigation before anything goes on top. We check with a meter, not a guess.

Why Huntsville eats cheap garage floors

Three things in this valley kill coatings, and none of them are on a DIY kit's box.

Slab moisture. Our humidity doesn't stop at the air — vapor pushes up through the concrete itself, especially on slabs poured over poorly drained red clay. Moisture-sensitive base coats blister and let go. It's the number one autopsy result on the peeling floors we get called to fix, and it's the reason our base coat is polyurea.

Hot tire pickup. Park after a summer commute and your tires sit at 130°F+ against the floor for an hour. Soft or thin coatings let the tire literally pull them up as it cools. The fix is chemistry — a polyaspartic wear layer doesn't soften at tire temperatures — plus real bond from real prep.

UV at the door line. That sun-bleached strip where the door opens? Standard epoxy topcoats amber there in a year or two. Aliphatic polyaspartic doesn't. You'll find the chemistry spelled out in the polyaspartic vs epoxy comparison.

What does a garage floor coating cost in Huntsville?
$5–$9 per square foot for the full system, which puts a typical 2-car garage at $2,000–$3,800 installed. Crack repair and moisture mitigation can push a slab toward the top of the range. The complete factor breakdown is on the garage coating cost page.
Is this the same as garage floor epoxy?
No, and the difference matters here. "Garage floor epoxy" usually means an epoxy base coat — which is moisture-sensitive and rigid. Our standard garage build is the Rocket City System: a polyurea base that tolerates slab vapor, flake broadcast, and a polyaspartic topcoat that won't yellow. Epoxy still has its place — we use it on some commercial floors — just not as a residential garage base coat.
Can you coat a garage floor with cracks in it?
Usually, yes. Hairline and shrinkage cracks get routed out and filled with polymer filler before the base coat goes down. What we won't do is coat over active structural movement — if your slab is still settling, a coating just gives the crack something new to break. We'll tell you which kind you have during the measure; the cracked garage floor page explains how we tell the difference.
How long does a coated garage floor last?
The system carries a 15-year written warranty, and the topcoat chemistry is rated well past that with basic care — a squeegee-out twice a year, that's it. What actually kills coated floors early is bad prep or the wrong base coat, which is why both of those are specced in writing on every quote.
